Fishing kayaks are kayaks designed with anglers in mind. They offer features to organize and store fishing gear and are typically built with greater carrying capacity to accommodate this gear. In recent years, many sit-on-top kayak models such as the Pescador family of fishing kayaks have become popular, but some anglers, especially those in cooler climates, may prefer a sit-inside fishing model since they offer more protection from the elements. Sit-on-top fishing kayaks are easy to board and exit and can better accommodate a fishing crate or cooler.

Some of the features to look for in a fishing kayak include fishing rod holders, flat, open storage areas to stage fishing crates, coolers and tackle boxes as well as dashboards or storage compartments to organize your gear. With sit-inside models, the fisherman/fisherwoman typically stores their rod inside the hull of the boat, but with sit-on-top models, the rods can often be stored vertically in a rod holder for trolling or horizontally if there is a molded-in depression for the rod. If you want to use a fish finder or transducer, you’ll also want to look for a kayak with a panel to mount this type of tool. Some models of fishing kayaks come with built-in gear tracks that can accommodate mounts to support fish finders, phones and other electronics. Another important item to consider as you compare fishing kayak options is the kayak seat. If you plan to take longer fishing expeditions, you’ll want a seat with good, ventilated padding and an adjustable backrest.
